Restaurant Manager Phone Interview Tips Pt. 1
Keep in mind...the phone interview in the restaurant business is used first and foremost to see if the hiring company wants to proceed further with the candidate. They do this by assessing not only the content of the answers they get, but also by the energy, voice inflection and ENTHUSIASM!!
The interviewer really has one hand tied behind their back. They can't see the person (body language, professional appearance) so they have only the content of their answers and how excited the person sounds.
Rule #1 Be enthusiastic!! Even the best, well thought out answers will do nothing if the person delivering those answers sounds like a real bump on a log! Remember...they want engaging, personable Managers...not nuclear engineers!
- Smile when you talk..it comes across in the interview
- Stand up...look out the window. It keeps your voice from sounding dull
- Avoid, "no" or "yes" answers...one word answers are killers
- It's OK to pause when thinking of an answer. Don't rush into an answer just to avoid 3 seconds of silence
- Enthusiasm! Restaurants want to hire people sound excited about that company (human nature)
